There were really only two directions a How to Train Your Dragon game could have gone, and part of me is disappointed that it went in the monster battling route, instead of the pet sim route. Still, compared to the console counterparts How to Train Your Dragon on Nintendo DS is the best of the bunch, but might not be enough to keep your kid's interest.

How to Train Your Dragon the game begins shortly after the film ends, so spoiler alerts to you chumps who haven't seen it yet. The entire town now has pet dragons and they want to compete with them in a battle tournament. As either Hiccup or Astrid, players have to train their dragons to become the strongest one in the village. Most of this story is told through glorified talking heads, though a good amount of the game has some solid voice work from mostly good soundalikes. Griptonite has a history of putting voicework into games I don't expect to have any, which is always a pleasant surprise.

Much like Ubisoft's Battle of Giants series, How to Train Your Dragon centers almost entirely around battling. The actual village is more of an overworld map and players tap on the starred location to move there. Various characters will give players quests, which almost always require battling a few wild dragons and collecting some item. It's a shame that I can't run around the town in any real sense. The lack of exploration makes the game feel very limited.

Battling, being the heart and soul of the game, gets all the love, and it totally shows. It's a turn based battle system, with a few twists. Each dragon has an energy bar, and each move uses a certain amount of it. Both dragon's energy bars refill at the same speed.

There's a lot to like about the battle system. There are a ton of special effects that the attacks can do, both offensive (burn, blind, wound) and defensive (shield, speed, stamina). It opens the game up to a lot of strategy, and the enemy dragons start using these techniques almost immediately, forcing players to learn them too. The amount of options is sizable. Players dragons learn new moves by leveling up, and can mix and match a combination of eight moves as they see fit. They can even switch moves in the middle of battle.

The Pokemon influence is obvious, but the developer has made How to Train Your Dragon feel unique enough that it shouldn't be written off as a copycat. The 3D battles look good, and there's a lot of exciting and intense animations. and while the game isn;'t very long, there are numerous types of dragon's to train, and the battles do get challenging. I actually had a lot of fun fiddling with the moves, finding the right combos and perfecting my dragon.

In addition to the battles there are a couple mini-games, like a top-down shooter. They're more distractions than actual major gameplay elements, but it's a nice little respite between the battles.
